Speaking of cachaça…

My wife, who is expecting our first child, is from Brazil. As is the tradition in Bahia where she comes from, I prepared the “temperada de parida”. Literally “seasoned of the woman who just gave birth” (I just know there is a shorter translation somewhere).

Following my mother-in-law recipe, I took a briefly blanched sprig of rosemary, one of mint and one of fennel and pushed those herbs through the neck of a bottle. I filled the bottle with cachaça 51.

When my wife comes back from the hospital, we will put the bottle on a tray with small glasses and will offer a drink to all that come to visit.

Some traditions are not to be changed.
